Advanced Flow Monitoring
Detects Unusually Long, Short, High, and Low Water Usage in Real Time
Once the valve opens, LinkTap monitors water flow in three key areas:
-
Flow rate (in LPM or GPM)
-
Flow duration
-
Water usage (in liters or gallons)
Previously, LinkTap devices could only detect abnormal flow rates, identifying both excessively high and low flow conditions. With the introduction of the Advanced Flow Monitoring feature, LinkTap now also detects unusually long or short watering durations, as well as abnormally high or low water usage, all in real time.
Where Is the “Advanced Flow Monitoring” Feature Used?
The Advanced Flow Monitoring is designed for scenarios where continuous water flow monitoring is essential to prevent water waste, flooding, or equipment malfunction.
One common use case is topping up a swimming pool using an Automatic Water Leveller, which typically includes a mechanical float valve. Over time, the float valve may fail, or the hose connected to the leveller may detach unexpectedly. Either scenario can lead to excessive water loss or garden flooding. By integrating a LinkTap water timer with Advanced Flow Monitoring, the system can detect abnormal flow behavior and send real-time alerts via app notification and email. Optionally, it can automatically shut off the water to minimize damage.
Other practical applications include:
-
Motion-sensor sprinklers that activate sporadically.
-
Automatic animal water dispensers that refill on demand.
-
Household water usage monitoring, where taps or showers may be left on unintentionally, or a pipe may burst, causing prolonged or unexpected water flow.
In each of these cases, Advanced Flow Monitoring ensures prompt detection of irregular flow patterns, enhancing safety and water efficiency.
How Does the “Advanced Flow Monitoring” Feature Work?
In these applications, the LinkTap valve typically stays open# while water flow is controlled by an external device such as a motion-sensor sprinkler, float valve, or tap switch.
Note: The maximum watering duration per cycle is 23 hours and 59 minutes.
A typical watering cycle is represented in the diagram below:
-
Green bars represent times when the valve is open but no water is flowing.
-
Blue bars show periods of active water flow.

The system uses customizable water usage thresholds and monitoring intervals to detect abnormalities. It supports multiple detection modes to fit diverse use cases:
Scenario 1: Individual Water Duration Monitoring
If water flows continuously for more than X minutes or seconds in any single watering segment (blue bar), the system:
-
Sends an app notification and/or email alert.
-
Optionally shuts off water flow automatically.

Scenario 2A: Accumulated Water Duration Monitoring (Long Duration)

If the total watering duration within a watering cycle exceeds Y minutes or seconds, the system:
-
Sends an app notification and/or email alert.
-
Optionally shuts off water flow automatically.

Scenario 2B: Accumulated Water Duration Monitoring (Short Duration)

If the total watering duration within a watering cycle is less than Z minutes or seconds, the system:
-
Sends an app notification and/or email alert.

Scenario 3: Individual Water Volume Monitoring

If the water usage in a single watering segment exceeds X liters or gallons, the system:
-
Sends an app notification and/or email alert.
-
Optionally shuts off water flow automatically.

Scenario 4A: Accumulated Water Volume Monitoring (High Volume)
If the total water usage in a watering cycle exceeds Y liters or gallons, the system:
-
Sends an app notification and/or email alert.
-
Optionally shuts off water flow automatically.

Scenario 4B: Accumulated Water Volume Monitoring (Low Volume)
If the total water usage in a watering cycle is less than Z liters or gallons, the system:
-
Sends an app notification and/or email alert.
